The Social Justice Leadership Summit (SJL) 2008 will support student leaders and student organizations in developing their organizational capacities. The Summit will strengthen individual and organizational leadership skills, create a forum to create active strategies for growth and development, and address topics pertinent to the needs of the surrounding community.

GOALS
- Goal 1: Hold a Social Justice Leadership Summit to increase student-community relations
- Provide 40-50 students Volunteer Services Office orientation of access to services, resources, and opportunities
- Provide students networking opportunities through contacts with influential community partners
- Inform of issues that effect the surrounding communities
- Ex (Environmental Racism, Women’s Rights, Poverty)
- Learn how to partner with the community to build strong coalitions
- Each student collaborative must choose one social issue to address in the spring semester and identify a community partner that can assist in their endeavors
- Goal 2: Build a “Speak Friendly” Environment.
- By doing so students/ student organizations will effectively build relationship which will in turn strengthen the coalitions formed at the summit.
- Give tools to build relationships with people who share common experiences
- Begin a trend where students speak to each other in passing
- Show how to begin conversations with people who share a common goal
- Overall success would be measured by a greater number of student organization collaborating rather than having similar events at different times
- Create a Shared Calendar for student organizations programs that surround social justice and volunteerism
- Have at least two major events that surround an issue discussed at SLJ 2008
- Student programs would have a great attendance through “word of mouth” seeing that it is one of the most effective way to promote events on campus
- Have student organizations begin a base count with initial events for spring 2009; from this well will be able to measure attendance for future events of the same nature.
- Promote longevity of events (annual social justice campaigns)
- Goal 3: Increase Social Action among underrepresented groups
- Know how to affectively gain allies
- Empower students to get involved in the community.
- Utilizing Volunteer Services and promoting collaborative projects
- Increase access to campus resources
- Through the power analysis during the summit
- Students will leave knowing who their on campus allies are
- Promote efficient campaigning among under-represented groups; utilize the Inclusion and Community Engagement center which has a mission that supports these groups.
- Engage under-represented groups be able to relate to the situations and in-justices that people who share a common background go through.
